Homes for Hope: Student Housing in Juba
PASS is raising funds to construct secure, affordable student housing in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, where most of our scholarship recipients attend university. Many students currently face unsafe or unstable living conditions that threaten their ability to succeed. This housing initiative will provide our scholars, especially young women with a safe place to live, study, and build community. Stable housing is not just a structure; it’s a foundation for academic success, mental well-being, and long-term opportunity.
PASS purchased land in the city center of Juba very close to four universities where more than 130 PASS scholars attend school. We are reaching out and asking for more donations. Professional archtectural plans have been drawn and bids have been received from several contractors. The lowest bid is $750,000. The estimated cost for construction of a similar structure in the United States is between 5 and 7 million dollars.
WHAT?
The dormitory will accommodate 160 students and will include a Student Study Center and a Dining Room.
WHY?
Most of the PASS scholars in Juba are homeless. They currently sleep in a slum under a sheet of plastic or they squat in an abandoned structure. This dormitory will give them a safe and clean place to live with bathrooms and showers.
IMPACT
Much of the ongoing violence in South Sudan is perpetuated by tribal feuds and rivalries. This facility will be a life-changing opportunity for students from different tribes to live together and break down the walls of fear and hatred between the 64 tribes of South Sudan.
